Suffice it to say that after winning two Commonwealth Games medals without any major support from sponsorship deals or Government Aliann Pompey must need a lot of help now if she will go on other great international achievements in her career.
Well, the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) made it clear yesterday during a press conference at Olympic House that the athlete needs help. Pompey became the only Guyanese athlete that has ever won two Commonwealth medals with her 400m silver in New Delhi, India.
The GOA held the briefing to report on the Games that had arguably one of Guyana’s largest and most complete contingents in terms of representation in recent history. On the upside, GOA head Juman Yassin said that Pompey needs much more support.
“Aliann Pompey needs a lot of help. There needs to be mediums whereby an athlete will get adequate support. I am hoping that come next year, that will happen,” Yassin said, adding that he is anticipating the advantages of the National Sports Policy and Plan.
Yassin revealed that the Olympic Association pays a monthly stipend to Pompey, but that that is insufficient to take care of all the athletes’ needs. “I’m hoping that something significant will be coming from the Government,” he added.
Asked if the GOA plans to coerce Government for support Pompey, Yassin said that was done in the past under the previous Minister of Sport, Gail Teixeira. He admitted that his association has never done so with Dr. Frank Anthony as Minister of Sport.
“We did so several years ago without success under the previous minister of sport. We have not done so under this minister,” Yassin said, adding that funding from Government to prepare athletes remain a major problem in getting them to the next level.
