Police have said the man who confronted them with a cutlass on Friday is in custody. Trevor Piper of Sand Pit, Onderneeming, Essequibo Coast was shot after police ranks were forced to open fire.
According to the police, Piper, who was struck in the leg, whipped out a cutlass he was carrying on his person and threatened to chop a police rank who was in the process of conducting an investigation.
According to police, they were responding to a complaint made by Pauline Adolphus, also of Onderneeming.
The complaint was that Piper had threatened to kill the woman and burn her house down.
Police said when they arrived at Adolphus’s home; Piper was seen at the woman’s premises. When he saw the ranks he escaped, first into some bushes, before entering an unfinished house in the village.
Police said that as they pursued Piper, the man whipped out a cutlass he was carrying on his person and challenged the rank who stood about five yards from him to take him on.
After he was shot, Piper dropped the cutlass and attempted to flee. He was arrested and taken to the Suddie Public Hospital.
Piper remained in police custody up to last night.
