It’s time for the Reggae Boyz to visit
Congratulations to the Golden Jaguars for drawing their friendly International against Regional Power House the Soca Warriors Trinidad and Tobago Sunday September 26 at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
For a team that was dormant for almost a year at the international level and competing against opponents that are far more active internationally the results are satisfying.
Now that the focus is on the Digicel Caribbean Cup, what about a visit by another Regional power house, the ‘Reggae Boyz’ the exposure can go beyond the Digicel Caribbean Cup.
The last time a Jamaican national team visited the Land of the Majestic Kaieteur Falls was November 1973 to compete in the Caricom Championship.
Guyana National Team led by Thomas United’s Ken Gibbs won the GFC contest under lights 2-1; the goal scorers for the Land of Many Waters were Godfrey (Poulis) Norville and Rudolph (Chow) Hunte. Carlton Smith scored the lone Reggae Boyz goal.
The last time the teams met Jamaica avenged the GFC loss by humiliating Guyana 6-0 at the National Stadium in Kingston, the occasion was 1991 Shell Cup Finals.
The 1973 Jamaican National Football team that visited Guyana was: Vester Constantine (Captain), Derek Dennister, Peter Marston, Carlton Smith, William Welch, Devon Jeffrey, Miguel Blair, Rennie Phillips, Harold Walker, Karl Largie, Jeffrey Maxwell, Dexter Plummer, Michael Reid (Goalkeeper), Lloyd Mc Laren, Delroy Hinds, Joseph Mc Farlane, George Prescott (Manager/Coach).

Come on G.F.F. why should football fans have to wait over 37 years to see the Reggae Boyz just like Sunday September 26 when the Golden Jaguars proved that with more exposure these they can compete with the best the Region has to offer. Lets it get it on. Strange enough Renee Phillips Sr. who played with the 1973 Jamaican team against Guyana had his son Renee Phillips Jr. represented Guyana in the 1990 Shell Caribbean Cup he scored when the Land of Many Waters drew 1-1 with the Netherland Antilles at GCC.
