Oct 20, 2010 Letters
Dear Sir,
It is with great concern that I write you this letter informing you about the issue concerning my property at 106 Durban and Smyth Streets, Werk-en-Rust Georgetown. This is the second property that I have encountered problem with by the City Council. The first was located at 10-10 Durban Street and Cemetery Road, Wortmanville, a place where I was born as was father, brothers and sisters too.
After I had suffered an accident with my right hand I was hospitalized at the G.PH.C for three months. During this time an individual erected a building on the land. I tried to halt the construction of the building from my hospital bed but to no avail.
The property at 106 Durban and Smyth Streets was demolished by persons who appeared to be members of the City Council while an individual remained on the land at the request of demolition team.
Since receiving ownership of the estate in 1987 I had requested that all correspondence be sent to my home address at 13 Hague Front, West Coast Demerara. It was evident that after giving this information to the City Council, the Council had no intention of honouring it because it never corresponded with me at my given address to date.
On November 15, 2008 I received a call from someone who claimed that she was calling on the behalf of her husband Andrew Meredith.
She claimed that he had paid a sum of money for me on my rates and taxes to the City Council. She also claimed that her husband wanted a refund of the money that was paid. After speaking to the woman I made arrangement to meet them in person in Georgetown. After discussing the matter I refused to honour any refund to them because I had not made any arrangement with anyone to pay my rates and taxes for me.
On several occasions I visited the City Council to pay my taxes but clerks were unable to give me the total figure of the amount to be paid. This act took some months before they finally came up with a figure which I paid off immediately.
During the year when this property was demolished the Deputy Mayor, Mr. Robert Williams was on the air/television, he claimed that he was not responsible for the demolition of the property. I am therefore asking you to please; please look into this matter urgently because I will like to rebuild on the premises urgently.
Charles Wren
