– Qualfon takes on Republic Bank
Maccabees and Scorpions will headline an interesting and competitive night of basketball tonight when they faceoff for the third prize in the Division I category of the Pepsi Street Series on under lights at the refurbished Burnham Basketball Court.
Maccabees finished third in Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) 2010 League and thus played number two ranked Courts Pacesetters in a preliminary round of the Pepsi Street Series, losing both games and exiting the championship round.
Scorpions played Division I League winners, Ravens had a similar result. Pacesetters and Ravens will begin their hunt in a three-game series for the top cash prize Thursday night. Maccabees and Scorpions will decide on the third and fourth places tonight.
Scorpions have the advantage in this battle with a more senior composition. The experience of an ever dangerous forward, Alwyn Bellamy and centre Darren Thomas. Even though they are not at their best, their quality is good enough to outclass Maccabees.
While Thomas will be a handful in the paint, Travis ‘Cook-Up’ Foster, coming off his call up on the national senior male team that played DC Jammers will be even more threatening. Those are three players that Maccabees will struggle to defend tonight.
The man that will be responsible for getting the ball to them is guard, Trevor McCleod. There are two strengths of the Maccabees that always get them past talented teams. The first strength of the Maccabees is unity while the second is their team defence.
The Maccabees is a family-oriented team and that gives them a lot of confidence with offence on the shoulders of guards Hodayah Stewart and Akeem ‘The Dream’ Kanhai; those two players are the leading trump cards for the team as they face the Scorpions.
A supporting game will be played between Qualfon and Republic Bank. Qualfon walks with a lot of support and that helps their confidence. However, Republic Bank has been on a roll and are on a mission to extend their corporate basketball dominance.
