Police in Berbice continue their crackdown on operators of private cars who solicit passengers for a fee.
Some of the private hire vehicles that reportedly run the various routes in East Berbice areas parked in the compound of the ‘B’ Division Police Headquarters.
Several of these vehicles were detained after the operators were reportedly caught red-handed by alert cops soliciting and ferrying passengers, in the New Amsterdam, Canje and Corentyne areas.
At a recent press briefing held in Berbice, Officer-in-Charge of Traffic in the Police B Division, Deputy Superintendent Kevin Adonis had mentioned the difficulties the Force was having in tracking down the private hire vehicles.
He had stated that many times the police would catch these law breakers in the act, but because of a lack of evidence and/or persons not wanting to testify, the perpetrators would get off scot-free.
He had, however, vowed to up the ante, by implementing a new strategy.
