Dear Editor,
As far as the elections at the 2009 PNCR congress is concerned, let me remind Mr. Harry Gill and others that the integrity of the process that elected Robert Corbin as Leader of the PNC is not simply based on “Winston Murray’s graceful concession speech” but his acknowledgment that whatever irregularities existed were not enough to change the election outcome for Corbin to be leader.
Can these detractors point us to any election that is 100% free from irregularities any part of the world?
Can any other political party in Guyana come close to claiming the level of democracy that exists in the PNC and the free will of its members to dissent, challenge and even openly criticise its leader the way we see in the PNC?
Unfortunately some see democracy and do not recognise it, some see humility and a willingness to serve and call it weakness and some see an abiding respect for laws, regulations and the will of the people and would rather replace this with the Wild West behaviour.
It is behaviours like these that sometimes cause some to argue for less democracy. Democracy does not mean that laws and regulations must be trampled upon and ignored and that bullies can have their way…Laws serve to protect society from those who would take advantage of the weak and vulnerable.
The laws and regulations of any organisation are paramount to individual feelings and preferences and all must abide by these or use the same laws which provide for amendments to address group concerns.
Mr. Gill should not be allowed to get away with advocating or supporting any lawlessness challenges which the PNC currently faces.
Mr. Gill chooses to make references to his political support. Frankly speaking, If he believes that people care if his “…opposition to Government means a transfer of support to either the PNC or the AFC” then that is just another misguided statement made by him. Mr. Gill feels justified when he writes misleading statements about the PNC and its leadership but is offended when the weakness of his arguments are exposed.
He has now become a victim who needs to write a long rant about himself and what he stands for when the truth of the matter is that he will be judged by all of his statements, not just what he uses to glorify himself.
Instead of countering my arguments showing the unprincipled, time wasting and undemocratic nature of the anti Corbin campaign, Mr. Gill turns to accuse myself and Lurlene Nestor of “similar characteristics” which he identifies as being “very passionate in our defence, having the same though-process and writing style and articulating with razor-sharp precision, the knowledge of events that only someone who actually experienced those, could comment on with such great specificity.” Since letters to the editor are not subject to the scrutiny of classroom marking for independent studies I see no reason to comment on the above statement and would rather leave Mr. Gill to believe whatever makes him happy now that he is the hapless victim of this PNC individual who is prepared to speak out against the lies and deceit that persons like Mr. Gill misuse the media to perpetrate.
It is time that we hold persons like Mr. Gill and others who use the public media to present lies and distortions and who help to contribute to the decay and rot in our beautiful country responsible for speaking the truth. In the Western world there would be a fact check that would expose Mr. Gill and others like him.
Let us see if Mr. Gill will spend time figuring out who wrote this piece and responding to elevate his self projected victim status.
