The final four of the inaugural Digicel 20/20 Summer Splash cricket competition is fixed for the Guyana National Stadium at Providence tomorrow and pulsating cricket is anticipated.
The teams involved in the 2 semi-finals will be hoping to produce bigger and better performances to advance to Saturday’s grand finale at the same venue and with the hectic slam-bang action of the game’s shortest version big on excitement if not always substance, plenty of entertainment is in store for the entire family.
Admission is $500 to anywhere in the ground and the action heats up from 15:00hrs when Georgetown Flex Text opposes East Coast Flex Check.
The all-Berbcie 2nd semi-final involves Upper Corentyne Free Weekend and New Amsterdam Free Credit and is scheduled to commence at 19:00 hrs under floodlights.
This is an important tournament for the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) since performances in this national 20/20 tournament will be used to select the National 20/20 side for this month’s Regional 20/20 competition in Barbados and Trinidad.
Defending Champions Trinidad and Tobago and Combined Campus and Colleges are the only teams to be named so far and the Guyana selectors, headed by Chairman Claude Raphael, will use this weekend to see some more action before coming up with a side which will be best suited for 20/20 cricket, even if some of the big names who have done well in the longer version are missing.
Guyana face the Windward Islands in Barbados in their opening game on July 23 and the winner of the Regional tournament will represent the West Indies in the Champions Club League in South Africa in September.
Guyana, who won the inaugural Regional 20/20 tournament in 2006 and lost to Jamaica in the semi-finals of last tournament two years ago, have played 7 matches at this level and only Travis Dowlin and Ramnaresh Sarwan have managed to reach 100 runs in Regional 20/20 cricket.
The National Female team, preparing for this year’s Regional women’s tournament in St Vincent next month will be on show on Saturday from 14:00hrs in a feature 10/10 clash before the third place play-off between tomorrow’s losers will take place from 16:10 hrs.
The final is set to commence at 19:00hrs on Saturday.
