Strathspey overall champions
Strathspey Captain Vidyranie Seecharran receives the Permanent Secretary MCYS Alfred King Trophy from Director of Youth within the MCYS Carl Brandon in the presence of teammates, Director of Sport Neil Kumar and AL Sport Official Francina Nicholas.
Strathspey are the overall champions of the Noble House Sea Food, Ministry of Culture Youth & Sport / Al Sport & Tour Promotions Region 4 Primary Schools Windball Cricket Championships after they defeated St. Mary’s in the final which was played recently, at the National Park Tarmac.
They defeated St. Mary’s by seven runs.
Saint Mary’s won the toss and invited Strathspey to the middle and they ended on 72-1 with MVP Alexandra Clarke hitting 33 not out, with six fours and Vidianna Lewis 22 that included three boundaries and a solitary six. Sara Shuffler was the lone wicket taker for St. Mary’s.
In reply, St. Mary’s were restricted to 65-3 with Sukranie Abrahim 18 not out, S. Shuffler 13. Rajni Jagnarine took 2-14 bowling for the winners.
St Mary’s collected the Noble House Sea Food trophy.
After winning the Lower & Central East Coast Demerara zone, Strathspey advanced to the Region 4 semis.
In the Lower & Central East Coast Demerara Zone final, Strathspey beat Helena by nine wickets.
Helena took first strike and made 42-5 with Mandy Mangru 11. Bowling for Strathspey, Chandani Baul had 2-6, Phulmatti Singh 2-11.
Strathspey in their turn at the wicket reached the victory target in 4.5 overs, ending on 43-1 with Alexandra Clarke 19 not out & Vidyranie Seecharran 10 not out.
The other semi saw Covent Garden failed to show up to compete against St Mary’s.
Helena who was playing in their first Windball Championship walked away with the third place trophy sponsored by Noble House Sea Food.
Mon Repos Primary was adjudged the Best Uniformed team for the 2010 champions’ trophy. Meanwhile, the Organisers extended special thanks to Kaieteur News for the support the programme received, the Management and staff of Noble House Sea Food, MCYS, Ministry of Education, the Officials of AL Sport, the Management & Staff of the National Park and all the schools in Region 4 that competed in this year’s event.
Forty-four teams competed in this champion’s trophy, with three of them making their debut to the sport.
It was disclosed that the Region 5 inaugural Primary Schools Windball Cricket Champions Trophy will now be played on June 30.
Trophies for this programme are being sponsored by the Godwin McPherson Foundation for the top four teams, while outstanding players will receive medals.
