The scrap metal trade should remain banned
Dear Editor,
Dr. Samuel Hinds, the Prime Minister recently suspended all scrap metal dealings. This is one of the greatest things the Prime Minister has done.
The scrap metal trade has done much disaster to our cultural heritage by destroying fire hydrants, grill-works, architecture, public monuments and so forth.
They have even destroyed our drainage and irrigation works and stolen wires from GPL and GT&T and pumps from GUYSUCO. They have stolen fences and in my case the railway lines strengthening my bridge.
The Scrap Metal Dealers Association has barefacedly said they want their trade to go on despite the theft and destruction caused to our social, economic and cultural life.
The Association should be sued for the losses the state, industry and individuals have suffered. Every time that the Scrap Metal Dealers Association protests, it should be asked for payment and compensation for the losses suffered by these entities.
The members of the Scrap Metal Dealers Association could perhaps engage in the more useful business of recycling plastic waste or manufacturing fertilizer from the city’s rubbish or refuse at the dump.
Never again should the Government of Guyana permit this parasitic, anti-social, culturally and economically destructive trade to again raise its head.
