A Guyana Defence Force rank, Errol Newton, is currently under close arrest while four other men are in police custody as investigations continue into a shooting incident that occurred on Friday outside of the Blue Iguana Night club.
While reports are sketchy, this newspaper was told that the incident occurred sometime around 17:30 hours on Friday at the corner of Albert and Fifth Streets, Alberttown. This newspaper has since received several versions of what transpired. One eyewitness said that the army rank was seen driving past the area when a gang of men rushed towards him and then gunshots rang out.
Another person related that the men had an argument during which Newton was shot. It is also not clear how the injured man made his way to the Georgetown Public Hospital, but he was treated and sent away. The man was shot in his left hand.
Sources close to the investigation said that the men who are in police custody are claiming that Newton robbed them of some $2M. On the other hand, the army rank is claiming that he was attacked by the four men for no apparent reason.
