Dear Editor,
There is nothing more that would give anyone a good laugh, but to see any two athletes battling it out with maximum speed at the end of any race and not wanting to hold the position of the bottom first (last).
I had such a laugh to witness such excitement with the 5000m (male) at the just concluded under-23 track meeting sponsored by Digicel and supported by a few private companies at the Police Ground on Sunday, May 30, 2010.
As we would say in local terms, if u see speed, speed like two cheetahs in the wild.
My visit had to be short because of other personal commitments elsewhere and I have to admit, apart from the not so nice conditions of the track which is due to mother nature, it was worth it and hopefully in the near future, I would like to experience seeing stiff competition among the athletes/clubs.
An impressive performance was showcased by Ms. Neisa Allen and she has amazing height which I believe could be to her advantage and hopefully go many places.
She also reminds me so much of a former US track star/icon of mine, Marion Jones.
Chavez Sital, who is of a different ethnic group, was also impressive with his third place finish in the 1500m. I urge his club manger/coach to work with him and he could become the next track star of that particular race.
Turning the corner to a different fraternity of sports, well done to the entire Guyanese team, who did extremely well for the Golden Arrowhead in Barbados at the WIFBSC Long and Short Range Team Championships.
I am now wondering, with this kind of performances, doesn’t it qualify these sports ambassadors for the Olympic Games? Yours Faithfully
T. Pemberton
Editor’s note,
This West Indies championship was not a qualifying event, but rather a regional competition. The shooters can however enter to contest the various Olympic shooting events through the GOA. Guyana is due to field a team to the Commonwealth Games later this year and with those performances, it spells well for our chances.
