Ryan Brown was remanded to prison yesterday by acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson for simple larceny on a motorist who was at the junction of Camp and Regent Streets.
It is alleged that Brown snatched a gold chain valued at $350,000 from Nandalall Awad on May 28 while Awad was in his car waiting for the traffic lights to change.
He pleaded not guilty and accused the police of trumping up the charge against him. Brown, 22, of Broad Street told the court that he was sleeping on Camp Street when he saw a man run by and decided to follow to see what was happening.
However, due to this action, the police who were in pursuit believed that he had committed the act, said Brown.
Awad said that he was in his car when Brown snatched his chain. He said that he vigorously pursued the man in his car but had to give up the chase. A public-spirited citizen was able to apprehend Brown.
Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford opposed bail since Brown was before the court on a matter of a similar nature recently.
Brown was refused bail and the matter comes up next in court 2 on June 8.
