A former mechanic who claimed to be in a position to acquire a $10.2M motor vehicle for neurologist Dr. Walter Ramsahoye was remanded to prison, yesterday, for fraudulently converting the said money to his own use.
It is alleged that between August 11, and August 19, 2009, being entrusted with $10.2M to buy one Toyota Land Cruiser and deliver it to Dr Walter Ramsahoye, Suraj Narine Surujdin converted the money to his use and benefit. He was not required to plead to the charge.
Surujdin, 32, of 56 Chateau Margot Railway Embankment was represented by attorney Mohamed Zafar. The attorney said he could not fathom why the doctor would entrust that amount of money with someone. He added that there was something suspicious about the institution of the charge.
“There is more to the story than meets the eye.”
The attorney pointed to last year’s kidnapping charge against Dr Ramsahoye. Dr Ramsahoye, together, with an ex-policeman, was charged with abducting and assaulting Girdharry Surujdin. However, the matter was later discharged.
Dr Ramsahoye claimed that the abduction charge was as a result of false allegations made against him by Surujdin. He asked the court to refuse bail since he believed the defendant was a flight risk and would not turn up for the court on the appointed days.
“I stupidly believed this man when he said that he could have acquired a vehicle for me,” Dr Ramsahoye said. On August 11, he said he gave Surujdin $7M and on August 19, an additional sum of $3.2M.
The vehicle was being sourced in Suriname and after the initial amount; Surujdin allegedly requested a further amount which the doctor told him that he did not have.
Dr Ramsahoye said that he was told that he could not be refunded the said sum since that was against the policy of the dealer. Dr Ramsahoye said that he borrowed the money to give to Surujdin.
After the deal fell through he said Surujdin called him and told him that he was going to return the sum of US$4,5000, which he was given, via bank draft. However, he said he was never given the sum.
Police Prosecutor Inspector, Stephen Telford, asked for substantial bail to be granted. He informed the court that investigations into the matter are still ongoing.
Surujdin was refused bail and the matter put down for June 10.
