Dear Editor,
I would like to relate something to our President which I think may be of interest to him.
Mr President, approximately one month ago I was contacted by Mrs Isaacs, the principal of Queen’s College and asked if I would give parental consent for my daughter Alicia Bankay to attend a conference in Brazil.
I was told that Alicia was tentatively selected to participate and represent Guyana in The Children and Youth International Conference – Let’s take care of the planet being held in Brazil from 5th to 10th June 2010 (http://confint2010.mec.gov.br/).
I said yes that my permission is granted. On Thursday my husband received a call from a Mrs Bovell saying that the trip is confirmed and that Alicia should be at the NCERD building for 8:30 am. Yesterday (Friday) morning upon arriving there, myself and another parent as well as the teachers who accompanied their students from as far as Anna Regina and Berbice, were told that Guyana had missed the April 15th 2010 deadline to register and as such would be unable to attend.
We were shown an email reply to this effect. This is so despite cabinet approval being granted for the funds to facilitate this trip.
It is sad that we are actively promoting LCDS and our neighbour has a world conference for the children in a related issue and the Golden Arrowhead will not be there amongst the other countries.
I am not sure that even you Mr President can salvage this situation at this late stage but looking at the faces of six very disappointed children compelled me to try. Padmini Bankay
