Damaged koker door at Parika causing concern
The damaged koker door
A fortnight ago, one of two doors of the koker located at Parika suffered significant damage. The broken door has since been out of use.
The situation for Parika farmers is reportedly getting worse as the rainy season sets in. Up to yesterday morning, several parts of the area were flooded. The one functioning door of the koker is unable to take off the volume of water from the thousands of acres of farmlands that it services. The two-door sluice is draining farmlands and housing communities from Naamryck all the way to Ruby. One functioning door is totally inadequate.
A disgruntled farmer told Kaieteur News that he was informed that the NDIA was looking
at the situation. “As far as I know this is an emergency thing. A contract supposed to be awarded already for this thing to be done.”
The damaged door was built about three years ago through a regional project.
When this newspaper visited the koker, the single functioning door was open allowing the water to be drained.
It was obvious that the barrier put in place before the damaged door was leaking. This indicated that when the single door is closed to prevent water from going into the farmlands, the leaking door would still allow water to be drawn in during the high tides. This poses danger to the farmers whose crop-laden lands could become waterlogged. Housing communities will also be exposed to flooding.
