Cop crashes, bike bursts into flame
An energetic traffic cop ended up standing by the roadside and watching his motorcycle burn early yesterday morning. This happened on Homestretch Avenue in the vicinity of the headquarters of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit in the city.
According to reports, something about a sports utility vehicle that had sped across Vlissengen Road, attracted the policeman’s attention, so he sped after the vehicle. Indeed the vehicle was travelling at a fair clip, too. The roadway was wet from an earlier shower.
The policeman caught up with it and signaled it to pull over. Inside were two guards attached to a prominent security service in the city.
People are not sure what happened, whether the policeman braked too rash or whether he simply lost control. But they saw him pitch from the bike and ended up rolling on the road and the bike skating behind him.
The sparks caused it to burst into flames. The policeman picked himself up, his pants torn, and could only watch the burning bike. He even ignored the guards whom he had signaled to stop.
He also declined their offer of a drop to the hospital.
There was no comment from the police high command by late yesterday afternoon.
