The organisers should have thought of the wider issues
Dear Editor,
I attended the President’s reception on May 14th to join with my fellow Guyanese in congratulating him on his recognition as a Champion of the Earth.
I was however very disappointed to notice that there was not a single garbage receptacle in the entire area.
I searched high and low to find a suitable disposal place for my plastic cup, but in the end had to drop it on the ground like everyone else.
Not only that but it was a plastic cup, so kindly provided by His Excellency for refreshments, of which I was trying to dispose. It just makes me more convinced that he is only really an Economist at heart and not a true Environmentalist.
I hope in future when his office organises such events they think of the wider issues and provide biodegradable paper cups and plates along with disposal points where we, who are truly concerned about our environment, can dispose of them in an environmentally conscious way.
Such events should be the ideal opportunity to encourage citizens to properly dispose of their waste, not blatantly ignore the problem.
