– to participate in U-15 boxing card
The Central New Amsterdam Boxing Gym and the Rose Hall Bomber Boxing Gym, two recently formed entities from Berbice were Thursday morning officially accepted into the amateur boxing fold following a simple ceremony at the office of President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), Steve Ninvalle.
Boxers from these two gyms will be involved in their first tournament under the auspices of GABA when the management of the Forgotten Youth Foundation in collaboration with the GABA stages the first of a series of cards this Sunday at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym starting at 11:00hrs.
The tournament will support the programme of the local association to provide constant activity for amateur pugilists and involves boxers in the U-15 category.
Thirteen fights are carded for the day and the organizers are almost finished putting the modalities in place to circumvent the glitches that may compromise the smooth progress of activities.
One of the organizers, coach of the FYF, former amateur boxer, Sebert Blake disclosed that the card was planned to provide activity for the boxers in the nursery that are yet to qualify for the national novices championships.
He further pointed out organizers are contemplating staging the next card, slated for June 20, in Berbice. He explained that this is in an effort to decentralize activities while catering for young pugilists in the rural communities.
Recently identified national coach, Wincel Thomas is also playing an integral role in the organization of activities.
Meanwhile, Blake intimated that this tournament is the first of a series to be staged countrywide to provide heightened activity for local pugilists.
He explained that administrators are currently mulling the idea of staging the next edition of the card in the Berbice area.
The boxers involved in Sunday’s card are asked to be at the venue by 09:00hrs to facilitate the weigh in and medical examination.
