A man who was shot in the buttocks by police following a dispute with his girlfriend is alleging that he was unarmed when one of the ranks wounded him.
But police have alleged that Fitzroy Gibson, 27, was armed with a cutlass when a rank shot him on Sunday outside his Sandy Babb Street home.
The incident stemmed from an altercation between the man and his girlfriend.
Gibson, who is a patient in the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, said that he and his girlfriend had a minor misunderstanding on Friday and he moved to another house near his girlfriend’s.
Gibson claimed that on Friday night his girlfriend threw away all of her clothes that he had bought for her. The man said he picked up the clothes and took them into his apartment.
According to Gibson, his girlfriend and her father told the police that he’d stolen the woman’s clothes.
“I never stole her clothes, she threw the clothes out and I picked them up,” Gibson stated.
The man said he was exiting the yard when he saw a police car pull up.
“I continued to walk towards a taxi because the police never called me and said that I was wanted,” Gibson said.
He alleged that his girlfriend’s father parked his motorcycle in front of the taxi and shouted to the police that Gibson was the person who stole his daughter’s clothing.
At this point Gibson said he turned back into the yard and tried to get his cell phone to call his mother.
The man said that one of the officers drew his handgun and fired a shot in the air.
He said that the officer fired a second shot which struck him in the back.
He was immediately rushed to the hospital by the police.
One relative said that if Gibson had attacked the police he would have been shot from the front and not the back.
The man’s relatives are calling on the police to carry out a thorough investigation.
The police in a press release said that Gibson was shot about 7: 00am yesterday. The police said that they had gone to the man’s Sandy Babb home in response to a report of damage to property
However, they said that when they tried to arrest Gibson, he attacked them with a cutlass which caused the ranks to resort to the use of force and he was shot to his buttocks.
