Dear Editor,
The English people are voting today (06-05-10) in national elections and all indications are they will vote for “change” after 13 years of Labour government.
The Guyanese and Caribbean vote could be the deciding factor in the formation of a coalition government.
Change has been the trend, the mantra, the buzz word, virtually all over the globe. There is a lot of voter-anger and the electorate is prepared to retire a lot of politicians.
Although the voters want change, they told pollsters they are not sure the Tories or the Lib Dems are really the change they want. But it does not appear the victor will have a mandate to govern as all the polls show a hung parliament or narrow Tories victory.
A hung parliament means Labour and the Liberal Democrats could share power for an interim period with another election being called quickly midterm if the Tories see an advantage of increasing their majority.
Analysts say it is an unpredictable contest and it will be a nail-biting finish for Conservatives getting a majority.
The British people are Labour fatigued and want a fresh face at 10 Downing Street. Labour made several blunders in partaking in the Iraq War and the voters now want to punish Labourites.
Brown also has not done much for quick economic recovery from the recession. He has a dour personality and has been involved in a lot of political gaffes. He is not as charming as the other candidates for Prime Minister, David Cameron of the Conservatives and Nick Clegg of the Liberal Dems.
So the voters will retire Brown. The issue is the numbers game – who comes up with a majority.
The Guyanese and Caribbean immigrants could make the difference on who wins.
Conversations with Caribbean immigrants indicate they still trust Labour and to a lesser extent the Liberal Dems.
Their vote could help the two parties combined to win a slim majority and make the outcome less unpredictable if the Conservatives don’t win a wafer thin majority.
