Due to heavy overnight and early morning rain yesterday, the final round GTM One-Day cricket match between defending champion Berbice and Demerara scheduled for yesterday at the DCC, will now be played at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary tomorrow from 09:30hrs:
Berbice, who are staying at the recently opened Hostel at the Chetram Singh Centre of Excellence at LBI, defeated Essequibo in their opening game and are favoured to take the title after Demerara lost to Essequibo in Essequibo in their first round game.
Even if Berbice lose to Demerara tomorrow they could still retain their title on net run rate and it is assumed that the coaches of both teams are aware of how many runs they need from how many overs to edge ahead in the final standings.
While the Guyana Cricket Board has not announced a change to the Umpiring schedule for the match, it is understood that controversial Essequibo official Umpire Zakier has been removed from his position in the game since a protest involving him was sent by Berbice after their game against Essequibo at Anna Regina when Essequibo employed delaying tactics to help them avoid possible defeat.
The draw, with Berbice 13 runs away from victory when the game was called off due to bad light, denied Berbice ‘full points’ resulting in them surrendering their three-day GTM title to Demerara although they took first innings points in their drawn final round game at the Police ground.
