Investigations have been enhanced into the inspection of meters countrywide. In the last month there has been an upsurge in fraudulent diversion of electricity.
This month, Guyana Power Light (GPL) has placed some 40 persons before the court for fraudulent diversion of electricity and meter tampering. And the power company is advising persons to desist from such activities.
According to Field Services Manager of GPL, Looknauth Singh, many businesses and residents were found with illegal meter installed, stealing electricity. One person was found with 13 illegal post spans of conductors at Friendship, East Bank Demerara.
The posts were being used to operate a mechanic workshop and as security lights for a set of fish ponds.
Singh stated that three meters were sized from Two Brothers Gas Stations— two from the Parika Gas Station and one from the Vergenogen Gas Station.
The manager revealed two of the meters were tampered with and one was an illegal meter.
He added through the GPL investigative team, many persons will continue to be caught, especially in Sophia and Cummings Park, where persons have been caught constantly stealing electricity.
He said that persons should not forget the penalty for delinquents who would have to pay a reconnection fee, illegal fee and a two-year backbilling penalty.
According to Operation Manager of Loss Reduction, Wayne Watson, there has been an upsurge in meter tampering. People in residential areas and in high positions are now found to be guilty of fraudulent diversion of electricity and meter tampering.
He disclosed in the past two weeks there have been searches in Bel Air and Section K Campbellville, and collectively one third of the population had been caught stealing electricity, while lumber yards, restaurants, vulcanizing shops, ice-cream parlor, and gas stations have also been found tampering with their meters.
He revealed that on West Coast Demerara, East Bank Demerara, and West Bank Demerara gas stations have been caught stealing electricity.
According to Division Director of Loss Reduction, Kumar Sharma, the Guyana Electrical Inspector as an independent body assists with the pronouncement of evidence that are collected at the scenes of electrical illegality. He said that there are now affluent persons in society being involved in electricity theft. One lawyer was caught being involved in such an activity.
This newspaper tried contacting Two Brothers gas station in Parika and Vergenogen but received no answer.
