Dear Sir,
As a concerned citizen of Guyana and a worker who fears that what is happening to bauxite workers can happen in the organization in which I work, I am calling on President Bharrat Jagdeo to intervene and put an end to this depressing dispute.
I also want him to launch an investigation into the Ministry of Labour to find out why Mr. Manzoor Nadir and Yoganand Persaud did not carry out their responsibilities by organizing a meeting and make sure B.C.G.I and G.B.G.W.U attend the meeting in keeping with the collective labour agreement singed and agreed on by B.C.G.I and G.B.G.W.U.
When the union and the company fail to arrive at a satisfactory settlement, the union may proceed to seek to have the Chief Labour Officer order conciliation, then set a date for such conciliation.
Information is that the union secretary said that a letter was written seeking conciliation. Five months have passed. The union says that it has written several letters to the Ministry of Labour concerning the issue but it has proven to be futile. To date no meeting has called by the Ministry of Labour to deal with this burning issue
I will just like to give you a reminder Mr. President. While the five-month dispute is still going on, the clock is still ticking.
There are 58 workers and their families who are out of bread. Some of the workers owe banks loans of all type, small loans, home loans etc . These people are at risk of massive losses. B.C.G.I did not just dismiss one employee but 58 employees.
My question to the P.P.P.C administration is, “Who will provide regular meals for these employees’ children to keep their brain functioning so that they can acquire education to secure their future, our future the next generation?
I would like to appeal to the conscience of Mr Manzoor Nadir and Yoganand Persaud who have families and are caring members of the government. The Minister took an oath to serve and protect the citizens of this country. Have you all forgotten the promises made to us the citizens of Guyana?
A. Williams
