Demerara, Berbice clash tomorrow for title
By Sean Devers
Watched by a small crowd in steaming hot conditions at the Wales ground in West Demerara, Essequibo suffered their second defeat in two days when they lost by eight wickets to Berbice in the Tower Hotel Female senior Inter-County 50-overs cricket competition.
While those responsible for the development of the game in Essequibo could find solace in the fact that Essequibo produced a better performance yesterday after they were bundled out for 54 in their opening game against Demerara at the Police ground on Sunday, they will be reminded that an improvement of 3 runs was nothing to shout about and that batsmanship among Essequibians at all levels seems to be a ‘rocket science’ to their cricketers.
Badly affected by lack of preparation, injuries and alleged indiscipline in the camp by one of their senior players Essequibo crashed to 57 all out in 33.4 overs despite 31 from Skipper Kumari Persaud and 21 Extras.
Berbice had little trouble in reaching 58-2 off 14.3 overs with Melanie Henry making an unbeaten 22 with two fours to wrap up the match before lunch as Essequibo finished without a point in the three-team competition.
Coach Zaheer Mohamed lamented that despite the talent in the team from Guyana’s largest county it was difficult to prepare a winning combination when the team was only selected by the Essequibo Cricket Board a day before they left to travel to the city and had not a single practice session before their opening match.
Without national player Olivia O’Selmo due to a knee injury and Guyana left-handed batter Waheeda Bacchus who was cut from the squad for disciplinary reasons, Essequibo were always going to struggle yesterday on a sluggish Wales track with plenty of turn for the spinners.
However, that six of their batters made ducks and Sheneigh Calvan’s 3 runs was the next best score after Persaud’s 31, again exposed the fragility of the Essequibo batting.
Skipper Natasha Gangoo took 4-4 with her off-spin while former West Indies female team pacer Ava Gittens had 2-12 and 13-year-old debutant off-spinner Plaffiana Millington 2-18 for Berbice.
Former Guyana female youth player Jacqueline Singh made a patient 13 before she was trapped leg before wicket just before the end while 17 Extras helped the Berbice cause.
The winner of tomorrow’s clash between defending champions Demerara and Berbice at Enmore will produce this year’s winner.
