An attorney at law created much laughter in the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday after he was slapped with a drunken driving charge.
The attorney, Harrichand Mahadeo, turned up in the courtroom and duly sat at the bar table.
Minutes later he heard his name call and much to the surprise of the magistrate and those in the courtroom, the attorney got up, but instead of representing a client, he announced that he was the defendant in the matter.
Now he was obviously standing in the wrong place and was promptly ordered to stand behind the prisoners’ rail.
The magistrate, with some hesitation read the charge to Mahadeo, who pleaded not guilty despite failing a breathaliser test.
He was sent on his own recognizance to return to court at a later date.
