A brilliant all round performance by Lower Corentyne saw them into the final of the Diamond Fire & General Insurance Under-19 Inter Zone Tournament organised by the Berbice Cricket Board. Playing at the historic Port Mourant Cricket Ground, Lower Corentyne defeated Central/Upper Corentyne by ten wickets.
Batting first after winning the toss, Central/Upper Corentyne were soon in trouble at 13 for 1 in the 4th Over when Thameshwar Ramoutar was brilliantly caught behind by a diving Collis Cort off medium pacer Shailendra Hardyal for 2.
Steady bowling from all of the Lower Corentyne bowlers never allowed them to recover and they were eventually dismissed for an inadequate total of 105 off 47 of their allotted 65 Overs. Clavern Beresford top scored with 19 not out while Mark Lionel 12, Naem Yacoob and Dwayne Maynard were the only other batsmen to reach double figures. Bowling for Lower Corentyne were off spinner Lloydel Lewis took 4 for 30 off 17 impressive overs, while leg spinner Avinash Wajid 2 for 19 and off spinner Harrinarine Chattergoon 2 for 21 off 13 overs offered support.
Chasing 106 for crucial first innings points Lower Corentyne reached 236 all out off the allotted overs. Captain Dominic Rickey and fellow opener Chattergoon posted 59 for the first wicket before left arm spinner Dwayne Maynard trapped Chattergoon lbw for 13. Kandasammy Surujnarine was brilliantly caught by Clavern Beresford one handed at extra cover off Chaitram Naurang for 7. Rickey went on to make an attractive 81 with 10 boundaries while Joshua Ramsammy 29, Clinton Pestano 25 and Lloydel Lewis 30 all batted well. Bowling for Central/Upper Corentyne Naem Yacoob took 4 wickets for 57 runs and Mark Lionel 2 for 30.
Batting a second time with a deficit of 131 runs, Central/Upper Corentyne were dismissed for 165 with Lionel returning with the bat to top score with an attractive 59 which included four boundaries while Stephen Embrack supported with 50 (3 boundaries).
Allrounder Loyden Lewis completed a good match by taking 4 for 61 off 20 Overs (match haul of 8 for 91), leg spinner Avinash Wajid 4 for 47 and Verapen Permaul 2 for 31.
Needing to score 35 for an outright victory, Lower Corentyne reached 37 without loss with Trevor Thomas on 15 and Kandasammy Surujnarine on 19 not out.
Lower Corentyne would now play the winner of New Amsterdam/Canje and West Berbice match.
