The annual Mayor’s Cup football extravaganza will get underway today with a mouthwatering double header at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground starting at 6:00pm.
The opening game pits Conquerors FC against New Amsterdam United, while the feature match will see Camptown FC tackling Uprising, who has replaced Bakewell Buxton FC after the East Coast team requested to opt out of this edition due to several personal matters the club are dealing with.
Football fans at the GFC are expected to be entertained from the first whistle with Conquerors looking to exact revenge on the New Amsterdam Unit for a loss they suffered in the Last NAMILCO tournament at the hands of the Berbicians. Conquerors will look to the talents of Sheldon Sheppard, Jomo Hinds, Delon Williams, Joylon Harry and Travis Savory to lead their challenge.
NA United will rely on Adrian Adams, Colin Bowry, Leonardo Adams, Delroy Fernandes and Rondell Hazel among others to inflict a beating on Conquerors and end their stay in the Mayor’s Cup.
The feature contest between Camptown and Uprising will be an intense affair. Camptown have designs on the Mayor’s Cup, but Uprising have never lost in the first round of any tournament. That record they intend to maintain and will come out blazing. Camptown will have their work cut out but their ability are no secret and can produce inspiring football on any given day paving the way for an exciting contest.
Camptown will be led by the veteran Troy ‘Bugsy’ Prescod, Orlando Gilgeous, Richie Richards, Nigel ‘Powers’ Codrington and Lance Rawlston.
Uprising will include goalkeeper Keith Fraser, Omali Nassy, Terrence Lewis, Daniel Favourite and Rensford Coleridge.
The tournament continues on Wednesday April 7 when Riddim opposes Grove HiTech in the first match followed by defending champs Pele FC up against Seawall. On Thursday April 8 GDF plays BV Triumph while Alpha comes up against Victoria Kings. Uitvlugt then opposes Santos in the first match of a double header that features Western Tigers against Den Amstel on Saturday April 10.
The respective winners advance to the quarter-finals fixed for April 13 and 16, while the semi-finals will be contested on Wednesday April 21. The tournament concludes on Sunday April 25 when the championship match as well as the third place playoff.
Tournament Organizer Lennox Arthur has extended gratitude to the members of the corporate community that have assisted. Among them are Roshan Khan, DDL, Banks DIH, Digicel, Guyana Beverage Company Ltd, Giftland Office Max, Macorp, Courtney Benn and Nazar Mohammed of Mohammed’s Enterprise.
Two prizes for the Most Valuable Player were donated by Keishar’s and AH&L Kissoon Ltd, while Digicel will hand over a cell phone to the player scoring the most goals.
Meanwhile, former national footballer Keith Smartt has donated a beautiful trophy, which will be the Lien Trophy for the tournament along with the MVP trophy. The team winning the Lien three times will keep the trophy.
