Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony called the gold medal achievement of Guyana’s Squash queen Nicolette Fernandes as splendid and she has once again lifted the profile of this country.
Dr. Anthony said he would personally like to congratulate and commend Fernandes on her performance as well as that of Ashley Khalil, who partnered her in winning a bronze in the Doubles segment.
The Minister when asked whether her success vindicates the Government’s decision to build two Squash courts for the public at large, he responded by saying that, “not really, we always felt that there was a need to make the game more accessible.” He added that what it could do is encourage more persons to become involved in the sport.
Dr. Anthony further disclosed that the new facilities that are being built at Non Pariel is scheduled to be completed in May and once that is done the Ministry will then look to recruit a permanent qualified coach who will be charged with the responsibility of preparing players from schools, especially those in the vicinity of the facility.
“The schools will be the main beneficiaries of that project,” Dr. Anthony assured.
