The Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) has scheduled a tournament for those players rated below the top ten rankings, scheduled for this Sunday at the Malteenoes Sports Club, Thomas Lands.
Further, the senior players, preparing for the Tri-Nation tournament, scheduled for Barbados from April 2-4 will contest over seven rounds against each other in what is also regarded as valuable practice for the overseas tournaments. Following the team tournament in Barbados, the players would compete for individual honours on Easter Monday, April 5.
President of the GASP, Moen Gafoor said that the intermediate segment of the local championships gives the younger players a realistic opportunity of improving on their rankings. He is urging all players to sign up early for participation.
Meanwhile, the senior players are engaged in stiff practice sessions in preparation for the championships in Trinidad and Tobago. Led by national champion, Abigail McDonald, the local squad also includes James Krakowsky, Fred Collins, Floyd Carmichael and Ulric Harris among other competent players.
Guyanese players finished in the cellar position in the last Tri-Nation championships in Barbados but are more confident of a better placing due to the vast improvement of most of the players. They are currently engaged in training sessions at the Malteenoes Sports Club every Thursday evening as well as at the Oasis Club Carmichael Street during the week.
