“As I indicated when this competition was launched last year that Diamond Insurance was conscious of the role it must play in the Community and we feel that healthy sporting activities and sporting competitions should be encouraged.”
The words of General Manager of Diamond Fire & General Insurance Company Tara Chandra who was addressing the media at the launch of the 2nd Annual Berbice Cricket Board Under-19 Inter Zone competition which was held in the Board Room of their High Street, Head office.
Chandra noted that they have been encouraged by the BCB and the way the organization has been conducting business.
“We hope it will help the Berbice Board to identify some new talent which can help us to win the Regional Competition.”
An ardent cricket lover, Chandra was quick to place on record her view that Guyana’s cricket is not in a state that we can be proud, “And we at Diamond Insurance want to play our part in helping in its resuscitation,” Chandra stated.
This year’s tournament, similar to the inaugural edition last year, is being sponsored to the tune of $350,000 and will attract teams from West Berbice, New Amsterdam/Canje, Lower Corentyne and Central/Upper Corentyne.
Public Relations officer of the BCB Hilbert Foster in sharing details of the tournament informed that the winner will cart off a trophy and $60,000 with financial rewards also at stake for the three other teams.
This tournament would be used by the Board to select their team for the imminent Inter-County competition and Foster is certain that the Ancient County will repeat as champions.
The actual dates for the commencement of the tournament is still to be finalised but Foster said that West Berbice will clash with New Amsterdam Canje at the Blairmont Community Centre ground while Lower Corentyne oppose Central/Upper Corentyne at the Area ‘H’ ground. The respective winners will face off in the final at the Albion Community Centre Ground with the losers competing in the 3rd and 4th place game at the Rose Hall Canje ground.
In order to arrive at the respective teams for the Diamond tournament, the BCB will be using the Spready’s Bakery Under-19 Inter-Club competition scheduled to bowl off this week as the yard stick for selection.
Foster emphasized that attitude and discipline will be attributes the Junior Selection Committee headed by Leslie Solomon would be looking for in their selection of players for the Inter Zone competition.
Teams will be outfitted in tee shirts compliments of Diamond Fire & General Insurance Company as part of the sponsorship arrangement.
Foster expressed profound appreciation to DF&GIC for staying the course even in difficult financial times. He assured the company that their support is well cherished by the BCB while promising that the high standards the BCB has incorporated as part of their everyday motto will be upheld.
“We look forward to having a long standing relationship with the DF&GIC as we seek to get our youths to say “No to Drugs” and lift the standard of West Indies cricket again to the level where it was under Frank Worrell and Clive Lloyd.”
Marketing Consultant of the BCB Bishwa Panday, who has been responsible for securing the sponsorship, was also commended by Foster for his true commitment and unyielding love for the development of the game.
“Mr. Panday is a legend in cricket administration and has the interest of the game at heart and we at the Berbice level are proud to be associated with him.”
