Quick and proper response averted what could have been a major disaster at the SOL Headquarters, at Agricola, East Bank Demerara.
A small fire was noticed in the main electrical distribution panel in one of the offices, just after 10:00 hours yesterday.
Immediately employees followed the fire drill and the flare-up was extinguished rapidly. The fire service was nevertheless summoned to the location but did not have to go into operation.
Meanwhile Ken Figaro, General Manager of Sol, told media operatives that his company would normally conduct monthly fire drills and that procedure was followed yesterday so as to ensure the safety of all staff members. This was evident yesterday as when this newspaper arrived on the scene all staffers were lined up outside of the compound.
Figaro said Roach Construction Company is in the process of re-wiring the entire administration building. He added that the company has been doing work on the building throughout the weekend. He pointed out that where the fire started was nowhere near or connected to the storage facility where thousands of gallons of fuel is stored.
It is believed that the fire may have been electrical in origin.
