Having a laugh is said to be a good medicine, but having a good laugh at the expense of politicians and public personalities is almost the best of all medicine.
The LINKSHOW this year was indeed a good production with some moments of ups and downs. Young and veteran actors took the audience in a frenzy of laughter ranging from Dr. Jagdeo, the President to the never seen Julius.
It was great to see the new and young actors rubbing shoulders with the old ones who at times looked tired and weary. Howard Lorrimer stood out in superb acting and Nasimul Hussain was great to watch and listen as he told his uncle in New York about the latest gossip in Guyana. This was script writing at its best. Ron Morrison needs to get Hussain on his team ASAP.
Surprisingly, poor and exaggerated performances came from Ron Robinson in the script writers meeting and from Henry Rodney in a non satirical piece called ‘Saltfish’. Both Michael Ignatius and Sheldon Braithwaite ignited the audience with their gay roles and Ajay Baksh made the audience feel as if Dr. Jagdeo was on stage. Rajan Tiwaire was mediocre at best and Sonia Yarde was brilliant as she struggled with neophyte Tashandra Innis.
Dereck Gomes made a great comeback with a masterpiece entitled “Our Folk Songs” and Jumbie Jones was underutilised but did well in imitating Mondale Smith in a takeoff of a local reality TV show.
The surprise of the show came after the intermission with a tribute to Haiti, which was done in dance form and executed in fine style by Kijana Lewis and Leslyn Lashley. The future of Theatre in Guyana looks promising with the emergence of Lynyus Adams and Fancis Bailey, who both were excellent in their presentations. Thanks to Gem, Ron and Team for giving us another treat.
