The Pepsi Sonics basketball franchise will return to the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) Leagues following the present Republic Day break with its Coach, Mark Agard stating that he wants to play basketball.
“That is why we are training now. We are trying to get everyone together now” he told Kaieteur Sport yesterday when asked if his team will sit out the rest of the Division I and III Leagues scheduled for the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Pepsi Sonics had boycotted its opening game of the League and two others on the ground that the GABA did not respond to a documented infraction with FIBA accredited referee, Aubrey Younge. The club also noted the improper manner of their League invitation as a further source of their action to not compete in the event.
However, Agard believes that the action of the club could stymie the growth of players in an already infrequent basketball programme. “I am not going to worry about that at all. It was not a good decision. I want to play basketball,” he said.
The former national guard acknowledged that there is no dissent at the administrative arm of the club. He said that he is thoroughly supportive of the decisions of the Executive, but feels that they have made their point and its time to move on.
“I am not going to worry about it (dropping three games). I want to play basketball. They (Pepsi Executive) made a decision and they got a reward. My guys have to play now,” he reiterated with a strong sense of conviction yesterday.
“It’s not like I am not supporting them. I am actually supporting them 100 percent but my guys just need to play basketball. We are counting our losses,” the former national juniors and women’s basketball Coach told this newspaper.
The Pepsi Sonics boycott had forced the GABA to restructure the fixtures to facilitate the development. Their return is likely to create another reshuffling with the association now tasked with whether or nor they will be allowed back.
The club had consistently been at odds with the Trevor Rose led GABA administration in recent times, stating that those involved at that level are more interested in personal gains rather than the holistic development of basketball.
The association’s response has been dismissive and concise. The Georgetown auxiliary of the national federation had stated that they will not be lured into the “gutter”. Their stance remained the same when contacted for comment yesterday. (Edison Jefford)
