Continuing from where they left off last year when a number of training programmes were held for coaches, referees and administrators, the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) has kicked off its 2010 programme of development with a 3-day goalkeeper coaches training programme which will end today.
Over the past days, coaches have been exposed to a packed training regime which entailed classroom and field work.
According to facilitator Lyndon France who is also the Technical Development Officer of the GFF, the aim of the programme is to equip coaches with the relevant knowledge for the training and development of goalkeepers.
Some of the areas which constituted the programme were; technique for fielding ground balls and balls below the knees, technique for fielding balls above the knees and below the shoulder, attributes of a goalkeeper (physical, mental, psychological), players development (physical, mental, psychological), communication (verbal, non-verbal, dress, stand, walk, speak) and physical conditioning and strength training among other areas.
Participants were drawn from Bartica, Berbice, Linden, East Demerara, East Bank, Georgetown and West Demerara.
France noted that in following up the progress of participants, the GFF plans to look at club development with a view to setting up a specialized department to deal with goalkeeping. He is anticipating that the coaches exposed to this workshop will take the lead in this regard. He also disclosed that two more programmes of this nature will be done during the year. Meanwhile, the Federation will run off a course on Injury Prevention, Emergency Aid, Treatment of Injury & Rehabilitation of Players from February 26 – 28. Facilitators for this course will be Dr. Joseph Haynes, Physiotherapist Paula Alexander and FIFA Physical Training Instructor Linley Langhorne.
