– debuts on Sunday

Junior Da Silva thirsts for competitions, challenges and tests for his personality, and as an established novice Dirt Bike rider, he believes the time has come to take on the ‘big boys’ in the professional groups at the INXS Meeting on Sunday.
Guyana’s number one novice racer revealed yesterday that based on the programme at an INXS Performance ‘Hot Track, Grass Track’ Race Meeting slated for Joe Vieira Park, his team will work on his participation schedule for the day. Da Silva said that his intention is to divide himself between competing in both novice and professional races. The split will be fifty-fifty he said, adding that the featured 25-lap race will be the most challenging for him at the competition.
“I am very excited about racing [Andy] Rajkarran in some of the professional races. If the programme has 10 races, my intention is to race in five novice races and five professional ones. I will work it out on the day,” Da Silva informed.
He indicated that, apart from Rajkarran, the Bartica riders will also be threatening as they are usually very good competitors. “I am very excited to race with all of them in the Pros, I actually can’t wait for Sunday,” Da Silva reiterated.
After a breakout year in 2009 where the sixteen-year-old prodigy rode unbeaten in novice races, the general consensus was that he should begin wheeling his way into professional events as a form of further developing his track skills.
That became even more evident last weekend when Da Silva challenged Rajkarran with a gutsy performance in the featured event at Ogle. Rajkarran used his experience to survive the scare but Da Silva’s Pro emergence became eminent.
So up comes the ‘Big Money’ race card at Joe Vieira Park and the teenage rider could not have asked for a better stage to make his Pro debut-on one that promises to be a day of an entertaining assortment of races and biker stunts.
“I plan to start my practice sessions [today] and tomorrow. I have been lifting weight and running to keep fit and build my strength. I want to handle my bike properly in the Pros it is not easy sometimes,” he continued with this newspaper.
Possessing a shrewd sense of personal confidence and knowledge of his motor machine is something that Da Silva believes will give him an advantage. He admitted that he is short on experience but that will not hinder his aspirations.
Each Pro win is worth $20,000, second place $12,000 and third place $8,000 with novices pocketing $12,000 for the first position, $8,000 for second and $6,000 for third. Stag Beer, Digicel, Akbar Auto Sales, Two Brothers Service Station and Pepsi are among the major sponsors of the INXS Performance Grass Track Meeting.By Edison Jefford
