BK Int. Western Tigers face Bakewell Topp XX in main event
By Franklin Wilson
Linden/Georgetown rivalry will be renewed for a worthy cause come this evening at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground, Linden. Reigning Kashif and Shanghai champions BK International Western Tigers will come up against the most successful team in the Kashif and Shanghai competition, Bakewell Topp XX who have won the tournament on 5 occasions.
The two teams will face off in the feature game of a triple header card organised by the Haiti Disaster Relief Committee (HDRC) of Linden in association with the Kashif & Shanghai Organisation to raise funds for Earthquake hit Haiti. According to an HRDC member, this initiative is one of the ways the football community of Linden was showing that they care for the victims of the devastating disaster.
Apart from this encounter being the main event, it is also a grudge affair between the two; Topp XX were knocked out by the Tigers in the quarter-finals of the 20th Kashif & Shanghai at the same venue by a 2-1 margin.
The teams have all been hard at training to put on a great show for the hundreds of fans and supporters expected to converge at the MSC this evening.
The reigning Kashif and Shanghai Kings will be aiming to prove that their K&S win on Boxing Night last (December 26) was no fluke by making it two in as many matches but will find the going tough once again against a determined Topp XX unit that will be led by veterans Collie ‘Hitman’ Hercules and player/coach Kayode McKinnon.
Lending support to the home team will be goalkeeper Carlos Brown, Quacy Johnson, Michael Crandon, Ruel Williams, Keiron Cameron, Jamie Wilson, Ron Fiedtkou, Keon Sears and Troy Nelson among others.
The Tigers will be without the services of their Captain Dillon Fraser, Devon Millington, Colin Nelson and Phillip Rowley but will still be a force to reckon with. They have signed four Under-20 players during the transfer window. Sunburst Camptown’s midfielder Bevon Moseley, Seawall FC’s Gideon Payne and the Fruta Conquerors duo of goalkeeper Oswald Cornette and Odel Williams. These young ball weavers will team up with K&S MVP Derrick Carter, Sherman David, Ryan Thomas, Eron Hayde, Dwayne Ali, Maxwell Pellew, Travis Bess and Vashil Cantzlaar as they seek to the Tigers;’ winning ways intact.
The action opens at 4:00pm with Mini Bus Crew battling Top Class. Facing off in the second match of the triple header at 18:00hrs will be home teams Milerock and Eagles United who were both booted out of the K&S in their opening games.
Milerock suffered a 0-1 defeat at the hands of first timers Grove Hi Tec and will be eager to rebound as they also prepare for action in the 2010 Linden season. Eagles were sent packing by Conquerors 1-3 and they too will be aiming to start the year on a winning note.
Milerock will look to their proven stalwarts to produce the required result. The likes of Marlon Maxius, Kevin Sullivan, Oswald Benjamin, Michael Rose, Steve Brewley, Jermain Mc Bean, Randy Jerome, Jermain Grandison, Derrol Dainty and Ray Bob-Semple. Eagles will depend on the Major clan to guide their victory prospects, Ezzie, Rennison, Marley, Ceon and Floyd Major along with Clive De Nobrega, Ravin Choo, Derron Smith, Deon Benjamin, Ronnel Bristol and David Grey. All proceeds from this evening’s activity will be given to the people of Haiti to assist with relief efforts there while patrons are reminded that the entrance fee is $500. An entertaining evening of football is anticipated.
Meanwhile, a similar event is expected to take place in the city shortly, a collaboration between the K&S Organisation and the Guyana Football Federation.
