Dear Editor,
The Region’s most prestigious Basketball Championship was held in the British Virgin Islands last year and again the Golden Arrow Head was missing as was the case at the Belize tournament in Belmopan (1998), the US Virgin Islands (2002), Cuba (2004) and Jamaica (2006).
A sad situation for a nation that was a force to be reckoned with at the Regional Level under the Joseph Reds Pereira led administration.
The Land of Many Waters hosted its first Major International Triangular Series February of 1970 between host Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago and Martinique played under lights at Parade Ground Burnham Court.
In the opening match witnessed by an estimated crowd of 3600 fans Guyana humbled Trinidad & Tobago 46 points to 38 points.
In the second match, Martinique defeated Trinidad & Tobago 41 to 30. The third saw Guyana inflicting a 60 to 42 thrashing on Martinique.
The fourth game ended in controversy at the final whistle the scores was 47 to 47 the Martinique team management refused to play an extra 5 minutes to arrive at a results. The Martinique officials again refused to play a playoff match the next night so Trinidad & Tobago won by a walk over and went on to meet Guyana in the finals.
