A $23.6 million upgrade of the airstrip at Mahdia, Region 8 (Potaro/Siparuni) has been completed.
In addition, an Official of the Works Services Group of the Ministry of Public Works and Communications said that a new fence will be constructed near the airstrip as a safety measure which is among several new features in place as a result of the upgrade.
The airstrip now comprises a bitumen surface and is four inches higher than the previous laterite surface.
It also has the additional feature of a 100 foot by 100 foot apron which provides a safe parking area for aircraft and removes the hazards which previously existed in its absence.
Meanwhile, a source at the Ministry disclosed that repairs and maintenance of hinterland airstrips for this year will commence later this month, mainly through the use of “Resident Contractors” ie: residents living near to the airstrips.
Major emergency work which may be outside the capabilities of the Resident Contractors will be done by the Ministry on demand and as is necessary, the source said.
