Contracts worth in the vicinity of $30 million to construct Squash facilities, Bleachers and Practice Courts at the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport Woolford Avenue location were awarded to three contracting firms in the office of the Minister of Sport yesterday.
The signing ceremony had in attendance Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony, Permanent Secretary attached to the Ministry Alfred King, Director of Sport Neil Kumar and representatives of the contracting firms that won the bid to commence work shortly.
The three firms that were given the contracts were Fyffe Building & Contracting Works which will construct the Bleachers at a cost of $4.19 million; General Contracting Services that will build two Squash Courts to the tune of $20.35 million and N&R Engineering this is charged with the responsibility of erecting practice courts at a cost of $4.2 million.
Speaking at the occasion, Dr. Anthony said that yesterday ceremony marked the culmination of exhaustive discussions between the Ministry and various stakeholders which had resulted in a comprehensive plan being formed.
The Minister said that work has already started at the facility, pointing to the re-surfacing of the tennis courts which is expected to be completed shortly.
“We’ve already warranted the money for that project to the Ministry of Public Works and sometime early next year that phase should be finished,” he informed.
The second phase will include the construction of two Squash Courts, a Resource Centre, Badminton Courts, Bleachers, Parking Lot and Practice Courts, but according to Dr. Anthony some of these projects would have to be done incrementally, meaning depending on the availability of funding.
He assured, however, that the Ministry will ensure that some amount of money from its annual budgetary allocation will be diverted to completing those projects earmarked.
The Squash Courts should be completed in six months time, while the Bleachers and Practice Courts have been given a timeframe of 2-3 months.
The media were shown the drawings of the intended construction and upon completion all the facilities will be managed by the Ministry which will regulate its use to the various sport entities.
Quizzed on whether a fee will be charged for the use of the facilities, Dr. Anthony informed that that is still to be examined, but should the need arise to charge a fee; they do not intend to make it burdensome that could affect its full utilisation.
Kumar in his address welcomed the initiative which according to him was fully endorsed by President Bharrat Jagdeo sometime ago. He noted that when completed the facilities will be a tremendous achievement and an important addition to the sports fraternity.
Signing on behalf of Fyffe Building & Contracting Works was Linden Fyffe, while Romell Jagroop inked on behalf of General Contracting Services, while J.P Mangal acted on behalf of N&R Engineering.
The facility is expected to be called the Racquet Centre.
