Dear Editor,
Two months ago Kaieteur News carried a heart wrenching story of a trigger-happy policeman shooting to death a dog nursing her litter of seven pups.
From the story, the dog’s only crime was to be at home when the cop rudely intruded on the private property of the dog’s owner.
Was the policeman pursued by the authorities for his crime? Did any animal welfare agency show any interest?
This depraved policeman is perhaps mentally challenged. I cannot think of any other plausible way to explain his despicable deed.
Whatever the cause, he is a sad excuse of a human being and is a misfit in civilised society.
It’s not just an innocent dog he killed. He killed a defenseless but loyal and courageous servant. He killed a companion, friend and playmate of the children of that family.
He traumatized those young, innocent minds.
I have three wonderful dogs. They are quite intelligent and they are very much part of my family. I shudder at the thought of some crazy policeman or any other human being intruding on my private property and trying to hurt or kill any of my dogs.
My property is their home and territory and I know they will try to protect it. My dogs will try to protect me without a second thought for their own safety.
In return for their unconditional loyalty I can only promise them that l will not stand by passively and watch them come to harm at the hands of any low-life humans. Peter Pritipaul
