Five persons died when the minibus in which they were travelling on the De Hoop Mahaica Public Road, East Coast Demerara slammed into the back of a truck last evening.
Those killed are the driver of the route 50 minibus, Gary McCalmont, called Percy, of Number 28 Village, West Coast Berbice; Troy Douglas of Weldaad; Sheneka Fraser, a teacher from Lovely Lass Village all on the West Coast of Berbice, Patrina Munroe and 52-year-old Mary Blair.
Seven persons were injured, including Jonathan Bourne of 164 Alexander Street, Kitty, who celebrated his first birthday yesterday; Clavia Williams and Joshua Johnson. Reports reaching this newspaper stated that the minibus was travelling from Georgetown to Berbice when it slammed into an unlit paddy truck. Residents in the area confirmed that the driver of the minibus, McCalmont, along with the two front seat passengers, Skeneka Fraser and Patrina Munroe died on the spot.
Williams and Blair reportedly succumbed at the Mahaicony Hospital where all the injured passengers were rushed immediately after the accident.
Eyewitnesses said that the bus had to be prised open to get some of the injured and the dead passengers out.
Kaieteur News understands that the driver of the truck was under the influence of alcohol and he is in police custody.
Several ambulances were used to transport the badly injured from the Mahaicony Hospital to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
There, the scene was one of chaos as the hospital staff battled to get the situation under control. The bus which is owned by the driver was on its second trip to Berbice for the day.
Several colleagues of the dead driver expressed shock upon hearing of the tragedy.
At the hospital, a crowd gathered as word got around of the accident. The Georgetown hospital staff was pushed to the limit as stretchers and manpower ran low. The sight of the injured brought expressions of shock and disbelief.
This accident was reminiscent of another that claimed a dozen lives of people returning from Mashramani celebrations in New Amsterdam.
