Dear Editor,
Deep from within my heart, I offer the purest of sympathies to Rustum Bulkan over the death of his brilliant daughter. I have one child, a daughter so I feel the immense pain of Mr. Bulkan.
I got to know him during the reign of Father Morison as a crusading editor with the Catholic Standard. Rustum is a very nice gentleman who loves his country and a patriotic businessman. Rustum was one of the first persons in Guyana to pen a positive public letter (in the Catholic Standard) about my public commentaries when I wrote for that newspaper. This is not the time to be critical of Guyana because the moment should be left to the Bulkan family to grieve, but if Guyana was a different country, Rustum’s daughter would have been alive today
Given her precocity, there was always a place for her on the UG teaching staff. But would she have wanted to suffer the anger, frustration and occupational burden that working at UG entails.
At her age, she certainly would not have deserved that. Coming from the resourceful foreign universities that she was familiar with, UG would have not helped in the development of her intellectual character. I have no doubt in my mind, knowing her father he would have preferred his daughter to offer her service to her country. But more than this, if UG was the place it was when so many brilliant Guyanese sons and daughters were students there and so many extraordinary Guyanese sons and daughters were lecturers there in the seventies, then Aliya Bulkan would probably have graduated with flying colours and would have returned there to continue her stellar life
All Guyanese should make sure that this country returns to the days when it had an outstanding University so there can never, I repeat never be another episode that took the life of Aliya Bulkan. Take care, Rustum. Life has to be lived and despite your tragedy, I know you will live your life with dedication to the values that have made civilization worthwhile.
Please let me know how in my modest, humble ways I can ever be of help to you and your family
Frederick Kissoon
