Maccabees won their first major tournament this year when they took the sting out of the Beepat’s Scorpions in the First Division final of the second annual Kevin Worrell Memorial (KWM) basketball competition Sunday.
Maccabees won 33-21 with K’naniel Stewart scoring 10 points and guess player, Akeem Kanhai five points at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. D. Soutar scored 11 points for Beepat’s Scorpions in the First ‘D’ final.
Maccabees defeated Ravens and defending champions, Nets on their way to the final while Scorpions stung Courts Pacesetters (CPS) and Pepsi Sonics to reach the final. Six teams participated in the seven-a-side competition.
CPS’ Third Division team won that version of the one-day event when they defeated the Ravens 22-21 in a nail-biting final. The game’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) Keon Hyles scored 11 points for Pacesetters while M. Haynes had 10 points for Ravens.
Kevin Worrel, a former Courts Pacesetters player, collapsed suddenly on Burnham Court on October 5 last year and was pronounced dead at the Georgetown Public Hospital later that same day. His mysterious death was widely publicised.
Worrel was 21 years old at the time of his demise and was participating in a Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association Retreat to launch the 2008/09 Season. President, Trevor Rose had announced the tournament in his honour.
