The annual Rockstone Fish Festival, which is now in its fourth year, attracted hundreds of people seeking to access Region Ten’s newest tourism destination to experience unadulterated leisure and fun.
Fish Festival this year, however, was more of a picnic with whole families taking the day out, with picnic baskets, tents, hammocks and other paraphernalia people usually take on such outings.
And although fishing rods were plentiful enough, there seemed to be a scarcity of fish.
Persons seemed to enjoy the day’s outing nonetheless. Many persons took trips to Gluck Island in speedboats, while the more adventurous ones ventured into the river for a swim.
The children of course had a ‘field day’ on the trampoline and Ferris Wheel.
Beginning a little later than was expected, the opening ceremony saw the local Toshao, the Chairman of Region Ten, Mortimer Mingo, and the president of the Rockstone Tourism Association, Donald Williams.
Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority, Indranauth Haralsingh, also briefly addressed the gathering, and extending greetings on behalf of Minister of Tourism, Manniram Persaud, who was absent.
Haralsingh described the Fish Festival as a viable Tourism product, with alot of potential. He said that it was the only one of its kind in the country, and commended the Rockstone community for successfully hosting the event.
Regional Chairman, Mortimer Mingo, reiterated those very sentiments in his address. He said that the festival means a lot to Linden and Region Ten.
The Linden Economic Advancement Fund was lauded for its instrumentality in promoting the very first Fish Festival in 2005.
LEAP’s Representative, Tina Horslen, said that she was proud that the community has been able to successfully continue the activity, both collaboratively, and now independently.
She said that the Festival has been established as a ‘premier’ in the Tourism Calendar in Guyana.
She expressed optimism that over the years it will become more ‘sophisticated’.
