Police were late yesterday evening trying to contact relatives of a 30-year-old Melanie Damishana, East Coast Demerara woman, to ascertain whether her death was the result of foul play.
The woman, identified as Dianne Mathias, of Lot 215 Melanie Damishana, reportedly died at the Georgetown Hospital Public Corporation shortly after midnight, yesterday, after being brought there by relatives.
But conflicting reports are emerging about the circumstances of her demise.
The woman’s husband, Mark Mathias, has said that she had suffered from severe headaches, while her mother alleged that her daughter had complained of physical abuse at the hands of a man.
Speaking to Kaieteur News last night, the husband said that he was out at around 14:00 hrs on Saturday, when his wife called to say she was suffering from one of her headaches, and asked to be taken to the hospital.
Mathias told Kaieteur News that he returned home and accompanied by a brother-in-law, took his wife to the GPHC.
The man said that sometime after midnight, a doctor informed him that his wife had passed away. The couple has five children.
Mathias alleged that his wife’s headaches started earlier this year after “the whole steps” at their home collapsed with her.
According to Mr. Mathias, his spouse had sought treatment at a private hospital for her ailment.
But the dead woman’s mother told Kaieteur News that her daughter had complained to her about being physically abused. Police officials said that a relative of Mrs. Mathias had made similar allegations when she was brought to the hospital on Saturday.
They had also reportedly identified the perpetrator.
Kaieteur News was told that police ranks at the GPHC were instructed to arrest the suspect if he turned up at the hospital. Later yesterday afternoon, police on the East Coast of Demerara said that they had received reports that Mrs. Mathias was physically assaulted on Friday following an altercation with the suspect.
At press time, investigators were attempting to contact the dead woman’s relatives for statements.
