Mahaicony Rice Mills Limited (MRL) has finally paid $24 million to farmers in Regions Five and Six.
This is according to General Secretary of the Guyana Rice Producers Association (GRPA), Dharamkumar Seeraj, who told Kaieteur News yesterday that the milling company had owed farmers in Region Five $8 million, while $16 million was owed to farmers in Region Six.
Seeraj said he was informed of this latest development by the management of the milling company.
However, in an effort to verify this, Seeraj will be meeting with farmers in Region Five today.
He also explained that extension officers in both regions have been instructed to find out if there are farmers who were not paid by MRL.
In August, a total of $17 million was paid off to farmers in Essequibo by the milling company. MRL had promised to pay off the farmers by October 2, 2009, but could not honour that commitment for some reason.
The General Secretary on many occasions had expressed the view that although the monies will be paid to the farmers, it is unfortunate that the situation had to reach a level which required the intervention of the GRPA and the Ministry of Agriculture.
Seeraj had noted that farmers should be paid by all millers within 42 days of purchase.
Anytime after this, would only put farmers at risk and in an unnecessary position, Seeraj said.
However, he added that the GRPA recognises the difficulties that some millers face.
In this regard, he noted that MRL has made a commitment that the situation will not occur again.
Seeraj advised that millers keep their monies aside in order to pay farmers upon purchase so as to avoid a situation like this.
The milling company had made a commitment to the Ministry of Agriculture to pay out a total of $171 million to Region Six farmers before harvesting.
