Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform, Robert Corbin, has said that the recent United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) report on Guyana reflects the harsh reality under which Guyanese are living.
At the time the party leader was addressing members of the media at his party’s weekly press conference at Congress Place, Thursday last.
Corbin said that one must take into consideration the statistical records which illustrate that Guyana has a much higher rate of emigration of skilled workers compared to other countries in the Caribbean.
He attributed the main cause of emigration to the conditions which the government has imposed on the Guyanese people.
An estimated two out of every three skilled Guyanese leave local shores in search of greener pastures, he said.
At present, Guyana has an emigration rate of 33.5 percent and among those are the country’s university graduates.
According to the report, the major continent of destination for migrants from Guyana is North America with 78.6 per cent of Guyanese emigrants living there.
The report shows that remittances, which are usually sent to immediate family members who have stayed behind, are among the most direct benefits from migration; their benefits spread broadly into local economies. They also serve as foreign exchange earnings for the origin countries of migrants.
According to the report, migration can raise a person’s income, health and education prospects. Most importantly, being able to decide where to live is a key element of human freedom, according to the report, which also argues that large gains in human development can be achieved by lowering barriers and other constraints to movement and by improving policies towards those who move.
