The Berbice Cricket Board on Tuesday last unveiled its All Time Under-19 Team during an impressive ceremony at its Office, Cheddi Jagan Street, New Amsterdam, Berbice. The Team unveiling was another in a series of activities organised by the Special Events Committee of the Board to mark the 70th Anniversary of the Berbice Cricket Board since its formation in 1939.
The Team selected by a three man committee headed by veteran sports journalist and National Junior cricketer Sean Devers represents the top Under-19 players who played for the county since the Inter-county and Regional Tournament started.
Successful three times National Under-19 captain Andre Percival leads the team with the rest of the team being Sudesh Dhaniram, Gopie Beasmonie, Tyrone Etwaroo, Narsingh Deonarine, Hemnarine Chattergoon, Vishal Nagamootoo, Mahendra Nagamootoo, Suresh Ganouri, David Fingal and Ray Joseph. A colourful billboard sponsored by the GTM Group of Companies with pictures and information of the players was unveiled by Andre Percival and former West Indies Test Opener Leonard Baichan.
Chairman of the Special Events Committee and PRO of the Board Hilbert Foster stated that the aims of selecting the team was to honour the county’s outstanding Under-19 players over the last 4 decades, to provide positive role models to the current generation of players and to offer inspiration to them to follow in their heroes footsteps.
The Board, he stated would review the All Time XI every five years to see if any changes has to be made. Last year the Berbice Cricket Board named its All Time Senior Team and next year would unveil its All Time Under-15 Team.
President of the Berbice Cricket Board Keith Foster hailed the event as historic and noted that his administration was not only concerned about cricket on the field but was determined that off the field activities like cricketers personal developments, honouring of heroes and coaching take priority as well. He noted that the passion and pride has returned to the game in the county and called on all involved in the game to dedicate themselves more.
Treasurer Anil Beharry and Chairman of the Competitions Committee Carl Moore both spoke on the successes of the Berbice Cricket Board over the years and the need to build on the foundation laid to ensure that Berbice remain the best in Guyana.
Special invitee Leonard Baichan who made a magnificent 105 N.O for the West Indies on his test debut spoke of his pride to see the massive strides cricket is currently undergoing. The naming of the All Time Team was a brilliant and noble idea, he challenged the younger generation of cricketers to follow the same path of success of past cricketer like himself. Discipline, hard work and lot of practice are the only way to success, Baichan said.
