Charles Chan, a clothes vendor in Port Kaituma, yesterday appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson to answer a charge of possession with intent to traffic in narcotics.
It is alleged that on September 18, at Port Kaituma, the defendant had in his possession 24 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
Attorney-at-Law Ronald Burch-Smith, representing Chan, told the court that his client has no history of offences and has co-operated with the police fully. He further made reference to the amount of cannabis in question, describing it as a relatively small amount.
As such, the attorney made a request for a reasonable amount of bail for his client, adding that Chan is not a flight risk.
The prosecution however objected to bail, sighting that the special reasons for bail that Burch Smith relied upon were for his client and not the offence.
The prosecutor also asked that the matter be transferred to the Matthew’s Ridge Magistrate’s Court.
Bail was refused, and Chan is to return to the Matthew’s Ridge Magistrate’s Court November 3.
